It was my honor to be asked again to create the image for the Day of Remembrance observance in LA.

The annual Los Angeles Day of Remembrance commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Executive Order 9066 authorized the US military to remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast and set into motion their incarceration into concentration camps during World War II. This year's theme, "Uniting Our Voices: Democracy for All," illustrates the continued fight for reparations, solidarity, and justice. 2/18 @ 2 pm Pacific, with live-streaming on @jamuseum ’s YouTube channel.

This year's program will be dedicated to Jim Matsuoka, a revered Nisei former incarceree who fought for Japanese American redress and reparations as well as other forms of social justice. The program will feature Manjusha Kulkarni, executive director at AAPI Equity Alliance and co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, in conversation with traci ishigo, director of Programs and Healing Justice at Vigilant Love. They will explore the need for solidarity in the present day and discuss building unity to combat violence in its various forms. The afternoon will also include intergenerational artistic and musical performances, remembrances, and calls to action.

These were printed by the best, Tiny Splendor in LA (thank you Cynthia), and if you’re in the Bay Area this weekend, they’ll also be available in person at the East Bay Print show at Max’s Garage Press in Berkeley. Composed as a memory box of mundane but emotionally charged fragments, this drawing was the basis for a 2019 concert poster commissioned by the band @thenational. Some images were interpreted from “I Am Easy to Find”, the short film Mike Mills made to accompany the album of the same name, and some images are my own additions.

It’s on view now in “Future Channels” at @heythere_projects with many more works by myself and @ryanheshka
